Learn about The Oaks

The Oaks Master Property Owners Association Inc.

The Oaks Community is a deed-restricted, master-planned community in the Kissimmee Valley of Central Florida two miles south of Downtown Kissimmee. Once known as Overoaks, the property was formerly a cattle ranch. The numerous live oak trees give the community its name and reputation for tranquil green space, creating an almost insulated atmosphere for our neighborhoods. The Oaks Community is bordered by Shingle Creek on the north and Lake Tohopekaliga (Toho for short) on the east. Lake Toho is part of the Florida Chain of Lakes, and well known for bass fishing. The entire community is located in Osceola County with the majority residing within the City limits of Kissimmee.

The Master Plan for The Oaks community began with the construction of the golf course on the south side of the property, now known as Oaks National Golf Club. The course was designed by the team of Gary Player and Karl Litten and opened in 1986 on 134 acres. Following the completion of the golf course, single family home construction began in 1985 with golf course views of holes 3 and 4 (Tournament Court and Trapside Courts) near the community entrance, closest to John Young Parkway. The Southern Community, consisting of just over 700 houses, was completed in two phases beginning in 1996. Included in these phases were two gated sub-communities: Osprey Cove (a condominium development) overlooking the golf course driving range with beautiful sunrise views and Eagles Nest, offering single family living without the yard work.

The final construction phase of The Oaks began in 2005 with Shingle Creek Reserve, our Northern Community. Consisting of over 500 single family houses, Shingle Creek Reserve was designed with boating in mind with access to Lake Toho via the community’s boat lift. A gated section of houses in Shingle Creek Reserve offers single family living- without the yard work.

In total, The Oaks community has 1,452 homes. Regardless of the many reasons that brought us to Central Florida, we have each made the choice to call The Oaks community home. Within our neighborhoods, we have native Floridian homeowners and residents along with new arrivals from all over the US, Caribbean and the Globe. Our community members consist of working professionals, tradespeople and retirees.  Families are new, blended and/or multigenerational.

Board of Directors

Tricia Vanderbeck

Board President

My name is Tricia Vanderbeck. My husband, daughter, dog and I currently reside in Shingle Creek Reserve neighborhood of The Oaks. In 2019, we moved from New York to Florida for a less-stress lifestyle and a warmer climate. I enjoy gardening, taking long walks with my dog, and engaging with my community.
I am the former Director of Operations Initiatives for NYC Parks, a 30,000 acre park system, where I provided service to the residents of NYC for over 18 years. My experience as a civil servant in Executive Management afforded me opportunities to design and implement strategic programs to improve the delivery of services to the public, collaborate with community groups, elected officials and city agencies.

I feel strongly about being involved in my community, and have volunteered my time since my college days. As an undergraduate, I taught GED math and science to adults in inner city neighborhoods. After graduating from Columbia University with a degree in Biology (and a minor in Sociology), I became an NYPD Auxiliary Police Officer to get involved in public safety. Additionally, I served as Vice President of the Civic Association for 8 years in my former neighborhood where I worked on various environmental committees, one being the NYRising Build It Back Committee after Superstorm Sandy.

Since I first moved into The Oaks, I expressed my interest in offering my skills to the HOAs. In 2021, I ran for The Oaks Master POA Inc. board after Iearning that The Master had endorsed an apartment complex development on the golf course located at the entrance to our community. Currently, I serve as the President of the Oaks Master, providing my expertise in operations management to this community as a volunteer. As your President, I am dedicated to keeping our community safe, protecting our property values, and ensuring that our residents are informed.

Billy Harris

Vice President

I was born and raised in Miami, FL. I learned at a very young age the importance and value of compassion, honesty, and integrity. At age 5, my brothers and I were placed in various foster homes. Life was not always easy and often we lived in questionable living conditions. Yet through it all, I learned the value of perseverance – that no challenge is too great.
Conversely, I learned about love, kindness and compassion from my mom and dad who adopted us later in life. Aside from their unconditional love, they wanted to make sure my brothers and I ALWAYS had a place to call home, and after years of going from place to place, we truly had a family of our own. After graduating from High School, I had a terrible accident where I lost my left foot while working. After almost losing my life, I endured a painful surgery, months of rehabilitation, and once again learned how to walk using a prosthetic leg. Following a full recovery, I moved to Tallahassee where I attended Tallahassee Community College for two years.

Janet Hooley

Treasurer

Many Oaks homeowners and residents know me as “the Gardener on the Corner of Brassie Court.” We’ve chatted about gardening and Oaks situations for sometime, but professionally my background is in medicine. Twenty years ago it was aviation which brought my husband (an airline pilot) and me to The Oaks and Kissimmee.
After moving to Florida I became a small aviation business co-owner with my husband rebuilding and fabricating experimental class aircraft. Entrepreneurs are adaptive by nature and although aviation was new to me the basics of business was not. The U.S. Army and fifteen plus years with medical companies in both clinical and administrative positions had provided valuable experience with a wide variety of talented professionals. Chief among the skill set is the value of honesty and integrity in any endeavor.

Jim Trautz

Secretary

Originally from Chicago, my wife Cindy and I moved from Northern Virginia to Florida to take advantage of the great climate, the wonderful people, and the fabulous community we all know as “The Oaks.”
“Service” is in my blood. By way of background, I served more than 20 years in the United States Navy, having worked my way through the enlisted ranks and retiring as a decorated Naval Officer.

Upon retirement from the Navy, I worked for a major Defense corporation, where I led the efforts in support of a $75 million dollar contract in Foreign Military Sales, overseeing 10 subcontracted companies in various world-wide locations, who supported 40 different countries in the execution of more than 140 tasks. Beyond “work life,” I’ve served on numerous civic and non-profit committees, including various PTSAs, Athletic Associations, Disaster Relief Teams, and Church groups. I’ve also served on Civic Building Committees, provided input for Capital Improvement plans, and most recently, my wife and I were instrumental in founding the non-partisan, Osceola County Voter Integrity Group.

My HOA background includes serving homeowners as President and Vice President of the Lowe’s Island Homeowners Association, President and Treasurer of the David’s Mill Civic League, a voting member of the Cascades Master Homeowners Association, an appointed member of the Westgate Resident Advisory Board, and an active member of the Aspen Meadows Homeowners Association. I serve at your pleasure and consider it an honor and privilege to do so. My pledge to you is to honor the trust you’ve put in me; to represent YOUR interests and the interests of OUR community – ALWAYS!
